About Us

PROTOTYPING REVOLUTION

ONEOFF is the prototype of a new generation of modeling labs and expresses the potential of digital technology applied to rapid manufacturing.

ONE OFF was first established in Milan in 2003, within the context of the "Fabbrica del Vapore" project, as a rapid prototyping service specialized in the manufacture of models, functional prototypes and architectural models geared primarily for the design and architectural sectors.

For ONEOFF the true raw material is a 3D file from which every technology, material and result is possible.

ONEOFF, through the available technologies in house, combines innovative techniques (rapid prototyping , CNC milling, laser cutting, photoengraving, etc..) with traditional techniques.
Rapid Prototyping (RP) allows production of objects with a complex geometry, in a short time and without the need for tools, directly from the mathematical model of the object created using a three-dimensional CAD system.
Traditional technologies such as milling machines or numerical control machines allow us to create objects in all kinds of materials.
The combination of the various techniques available in house, means we are able to choose the best solution to satisfy the client’s requirements in terms of deadlines, cost and quality.

The company staff, that works very much as a team, is made up of young designers, engineers and architects with a high level of training and an excellent understanding of CAD 3D systems, as well as working experience in craft and artisan workshops.
Founding members: Arch Maurizio Meroni and Ing. Costanza Calvetti.

Electronic craftsmen have arrived in Milano

taken from IL PROGETTO, issue 21, Sept. 2004
George J. Sowden - Designer - Milano

"Electronic management of information by computers driven by 3D software has changed the world of design and architecture.

It seems a life time ago that people like me were running around making sure mistakes were kept to a minimum and that all the bits and pieces that went to make a product fitted. But it is, in fact, only ten years since the change started in the process, which began with the Industrial Revolution, where information created laboriously on paper, was passed from one desk to another or from one drawing board another, from drawing board to workshop and from workshop to factory.

Ten years ago we started to enter an amazing new world where detailed information is put together on a computer, where mathematical co-ordinates are created and used to construct things by numerically controlled machines. Tolerances have become a thing of the past.

The reality of rapid prototyping and digital manufacturing has arrived.

We make prototypes virtually and create the real pieces without tools, or at least without hard, steel, physical tools: we now use digital, invisible co-ordinates which enable us to put material exactly where we want it to be.

The advent of this electronic technology which has changed the way we designers work, has also changed the nature of the artisans and technicians who help us do our job. It has created a class of electronic craftsmen.

It seemed quite natural to me, when two years ago I received the first mailing-shot from ONEOFF, that a group of electronic artisans had finally arrived in Milano – capitale mondiale del design, where hundreds of professional studios, working with industries around the world that had, until then, been without this kind of service.

Of course previous generations of designers and architects, from the 1950s had been supremely served by craftsmen/modelmakers such as Giovanni Sacchi and Ovidio Rabolini  without whom all the initial energy and creativity of Italian design could never have been the same.

In the same way I’m sure that without the availability of the services such as those now supplied by ONEOFF, the professionality of the present generation of industrial designers would be missing something.

One of the most important phases in the development of a project is the presentation of ideas and, as with any project, designers and architects always find themselves with the need to find communication tools to help them clarify their intentions.

A drawing is worth a thousand words, we used to say: we can now say a model is worth a thousand drawings. Anyone can understand a model: the scale, the shape, the feel, the intention. A model is not subject to interpretation. The reality is direct, the intention clear.

It is extraordinary this possibility of a direct link from thought, to sketch, to virtual computer model, to actual model and, when necessary, with time frames and costs that, even only five years ago, were totally unthinkable.

ONEOFF helps create this direct link between project, model and industry, and becomes a pivot point where we have the possibility to verify the electronic information we are using to manage the whole industrial process."

ONEOFF IS ONE OF THE FABBRICA DEL VAPORE (STEAM FACTORY) LABS

PROJECT

With the "LA FABBRICA DEL VAPORE" (THE STEAM FACTORY) project relative to the recovery of the abandoned industrial area in a central area of the city (between the streets of Procaccini, Luigi Nono, Messina and Cenisio) the City Government intends to create a youth centre where young people can test their ideas and abilities in direct contact with business operators and experts of the various categories of cultural production.
The overall surface area of the complex is about 30.000 sq. m while the gross surface area of the buildings is about 14.000 sq. m (7.000 sq. m has been set aside for businesses activities related to seven macro areas - music, design/graphics, visual arts/photography, new media, theatre/dance/cinema, writing, interdisciplinary area; 4.000 sq. m for exhibitions and shows; 3.000 sq. m for additional services and refreshments).

The intention is to bring to life a place where different artistic and cultural activities can be carried out directly by young people or by parties that intend to work with youths by sharing their skills and professionalism.
The project envisions the creation of a structured space where it is possible to link culture and production and bring to life actions that involve artistic expertise, business activities and distribution circuits, a world where it is also possible to create individually since it will be possible to form relationships with others for reciprocal betterment and to increase the effectiveness of new.
The choice made by the city government concerning the end use of the area in question was to define the project guidelines, the purposes and objectives of the operation, the theoretical general activities, the possible parties and management models, reserving the right to identify the specific contents of the operations and the legal arrangement of the management board on the basis of the projects that will be presented and the typology of the parties chosen.
La Fabbrica del Vapore (The Steam Factory) is designed to be a meeting point between capable business operators and young talented people, put in a position where they can learn, experiment and produce.

IDENTITY OF THE SITE

The purpose of the city government is to make "La Fabbrica del Vapore" (The Steam Factory):

  • a youth centre of cultural production that is a reference centre to organise and gather together cultural, artistic and productive abilities;
  • a large workshop of ideas and activities directed at experimenting, researching, developing and exploring new languages, new knowledge and new techniques;
  • a place where young people are the protagonists of cultural production and beneficiaries of the business activities and events;
  • a space that is open to the most innovative ideas in connection with the most vital worlds of the city and of the national and international scene;
  • an active centre that can be visited year round and during the entire day.

FDVLAB

Associazione Culturale FDV – Laboratori Fabbrica del Vapore
Via Luigi Nono, 7
20154 Milano

Founding members:

ONEOFF SRL,
Accademia del Gioco Dimenticato, Aiace Milano, Ariella Vidach-AiEP, Careof-Viafarini-DOCVA, Il Fischio, Laboratorio Dagad, MacchinazioniTeatrali, Mascherenere, Polifemo, Process 4, Show Biz, Studio Azzurro.

The FDVLAB association was founded in 2001 through the interaction of thirteen different institutions - winners of the international proclamation "Realizza il tuo progetto" announced by the City Hall of Milan, selected by an international commission for the allocation of production spaces at the Fabbrica del Vapore - active in the promotion of culture and contemporary art in all its forms.

FDVLAB is an association that is based on developing the cultural initiative particularly sensitive to the cultural and motivational emergence that is specific to the whole area of youth, but not only. It is believed that through its calling the Fabbrica del Vapore should contribute significantly to build opportunities for production, enhancement and promotion of cultural and artistic values; opportunities to meet and exchange between different parties and different attitudes with the goal to become a place which multiples expressive energy, reference and connecting point for traditional and innovative experiences, indirect training place via example and invitation undertaken through expression, confrontation and dialogue.

Through the research and the experimental activity of the laboratories, the Fabbrica del Vapore is increasingly becoming an open and active space, aimed at developing and exploring new languages, new knowledge and new technologies. Thus the association is composed of players ready to make available to students and the industry expertise and professionalism, to create a real link between the processes of cultural production and the capacity of innovation represented, in the first instance, by new generations.

In a time in which the characteristics of a real historic transition are recognizable, FDVLAB decided to move in the direction of promoting not only a cultural policy for youth, but also those experimentations addressed to the expressions "young" or "young art", those languages twisted and redefined by technological and behavioural conditions absolutely unknown.

In front of the explosive media and global presence FDVLAB hopes that the Fabbrica del Vapore becomes a factory of all possible worlds: a place of aggregation of diverse forces, a centre of resistance to marketization of thought and action, producing a centre of new ideas and new proposals.

The objective of FDVLAB is to transform the Fabbrica del Vapore into a great laboratory of ideas and creative experiences in the field of visual and performing arts, design, architecture, fashion, photography, new technologies and other cultures.

FDVLAB organizes exhibitions, competitions and research related to art in its various forms, as well as theatre and dance shows, concerts, seminars, workshops and training courses.

Deeply rooted in the city, FDVLAB is connected and interacts with the world. Since 2007 it is among the "friends" of Trans Europe Halles, an international network of over 45 independent cultural centres belonging to 25 European countries.
